So... I'm back to thinking about decluttering, and in the kitchen once more. I'm going to throw this question out to all of you, see what your opinion is - what is important enough to take up space on your kitchen worktop?
We have far too much on our worktops - although less now as I've just squirreled a whole load of appliances in a new cupboard, and I'm possibly in danger of having nothing on the surfaces at all. I'd like to strike the happy medium of minimal clutter, but having things close to hand at the same time. I guess I've answered my own question really - keep things I use (Ian uses) at hand, and ditch everything else. What are your essential items in the kitchen?

The only thing you need is a toaster set to burn the toast and for it to be far enough away that you never hear it pop so the toast goes cold before you remember it. Then when you find the cold burnt toast the butter needs to be in close proximity and applied excessively. Then life is good.
Mmm.... now I want to make butter again!
Do you not allow the kettle to live on your work surface then?
We have the following on our surfaces:
Kettle, oils + salt and pepper, pot of utensils, pestle and mortar, blender, ice cream maker, toaster, recipe books, washing up stuff, dish drainer, kitchen roll, a random brita jug that has been sitting out looking for a home for about 3 months, food processor, microwave.
I just think the toaster is the most important :)
That's actually quite a lot of stuff - I don't feel so bad now!
Chopping boards standing up. Kettle. Coffee machine. Scales. Pot with utensils beside the hob. Canisters for tea and coffee.
Absolutely ONLY the stuff I use every single day. Everything else is in a drawer or a cupboard between uses.
I like to clean all the worktops every day and it drives me bananas to have to move stuff out of the way every time I want to do it!
Toaster, kettle, microwave. We also have a blender (I blame Ali!) and a George Foreman grill (which I mind much less now I've started making myself toasties). And a stand with plates on it. And a bowl for my keys 'n' stuff.
What's on yours? Also, is there a way to get notified about subsequent comments on posts in blogger blogs? I don't want to come back all the time but I can't see a thing that'll email me if anyone replies to this!
